Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

I first saw Antioch Missionary Baptist Church a few weeks ago, when I got lost. What struck me is the age of the church contrasted with the Jesus Saves Neon sign across the top. I went back last week and took this picture at about noon.

I took the time to read the Texas historical marker next to the church. The church was established in 1865 by recently freed slaves and building of the Sanctuary began in 1875. The church was originally located in the center of Freedman’s Town and was the center of activity for the African-American community. Antioch was also one of the first places where African-Americans could be educated. In addition to proividing opportunities to the former slaves to learn about God, ministries were provided to help them develop educationally, economically and socially.

Day 43

Feb072011

Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. It’s the point where I know I am close to home. It’s the point I know that in a few more minutes I can shuck out of my work clothes and shimmy into my comfy clothes. It’s where I know that Simba is waiting for me, and will run from his nap spot, to the kitchen window and watch me come down the walk. It’s the point where I stop thinking about being a technical writer and start thinking about being a creative writer, a photographer and an artist.

Day 13

Jan82011

I’ve wanted to photograph Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Dickinson, Texas for a long time. The building is beautiful and I was always a little intrigued because the plaque on the outside of the church says they do a traditional Roman Catholic Mass in Latin. As someone who was brought up during Vatican II, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced the traditional Latin Mass. It would be interesting to see what the ritual of a Latin Mass is like.

One thing I did discover however is that if I choose to attend this particular church for a mass, I would have to wear head covering of some sort and I definitely could not go in a jeans and a t-shirt as they are part of an order that does not follow the Novus Ordo Missae. When I was the vestibule of the church, I noticed a framed document that describes the dress code for the church.

I wanted to go into the main sanctuary, but didn’t because there was someone in the church praying.
