Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

I first saw Antioch Missionary Baptist Church a few weeks ago, when I got lost. What struck me is the age of the church contrasted with the Jesus Saves Neon sign across the top. I went back last week and took this picture at about noon.

I took the time to read the Texas historical marker next to the church. The church was established in 1865 by recently freed slaves and building of the Sanctuary began in 1875. The church was originally located in the center of Freedman’s Town and was the center of activity for the African-American community. Antioch was also one of the first places where African-Americans could be educated. In addition to proividing opportunities to the former slaves to learn about God, ministries were provided to help them develop educationally, economically and socially.

Day 30

Tonight I cracked open some of the Blue 100 pack film and took some night shots. Arlan’s is a small grocery store in the area that I like to shop at and their neon out front is a favorite of mine in the area. I love the unexpected bits of color that pop up in this picture. I wasn’t expecting that at all.

After I got done with my grocery shopping last night, I was about to pull out of the parking lot when I decided to see what the results would be for the lighting on the condominiums across the street. I was pleasantly surprised but I think maybe a slightly longer exposure wouldn’t have hurt the second picture. I think the colors would have been a little clearer than they are here. Now to figure out some way to make my J210 so it can be mounted on a tripod.
